Rangoli! We love Rangoli patterns. Our new organic collection was inspired by Rangoli! we took this picture at the Peabody Essex Museum-they have an Indian event every Spring, great for kids and adults alike!

the color makes us so happy! look at all the diyas for Diwali! at My Little Pakora we cannot get enough of color and more color!

It's been a whirlwind of a Fall....hard to imagine some of the Hindu holidays we celebrate, Navrati & Karvachauth are done, with Diwali, the "Festival of Lights," rounding out the end of October!

Growing up, Diwali was the major Hindu holiday we celebrated. Marked by time with family and friends, my parents had no shortage of Diwali melas (parties) we attended and hosted. Filled with yummie Indian treats, new clothes, firecrackers, and games, Diwali was a time we looked fondly towards every Fall. As a child, it seemed like our entire community congregated at our house, when it was probably 5-10 families. (things always look so much bigger when your a kid!)

The days leading up to Diwali and our yearly Diwali party were bustling with cleaning the house, my mom cooking all night (it really was all night!), lighting diyas (lights), and preparing the living room for either ghazal singers or card playing.

I fondly remember the day of Diwali: my mom performing the traditional Diwali puja (religious ceremony), eating tons of mithai (sweets) and opening our presents, which was always new clothes (yea!). Through all of this I always wondered what Diwali really meant? Why did we do it? Well, the answers were provided every year and the story of Lord Rama was told every Diwali puja, but the real intention of Diwali did not hit me until I grew older...and maybe a little wiser.

As Diwali inches closer I think about how my kids will remember Diwali. What will be their memory of Diwali at our house? I can tell you that while every Diwali may be different, and we may not be attending or hosting tons of melas, there will be no shortage of love, warmth, happiness, and memory making!

Diwali falls on Wednesday, October 26. Here are a couple of things we will be doing this Diwali:

:::Cleaning the house::: this upcoming weekend I will be cleaning the house and my goal is to have the kids playroom completely picked and decorated right in time for Diwali day!

:::Lights::: we love using tea lights and candles on our buffets, mantles, and counter tops. Given my little pakora, Anya, is a curious toddler we need to limit the candles by using some of the outdoor LED white lights in the house. For outside, we hang the LED lights and wrap them around the entryway.

:::Decorations::: we will use pictures of diyas made by Anika (my 5-yr-old), fresh flowers for every room, and colored chalk to create Rangoli patterns on our walkway!

:::Presents::: growing up, we always received new clothes for Diwali. This year I stashed away some of My Little Pakora’s tunic dresses as Diwali Gifts! (ppssst...check out the boys tunics for a great gift or to wear on Diwali)

:::Charity::: our mission has always been to provide charity to those less fortunate and service to our community. Recently, we participated in a day of community service. Can you imagine with other volunteers we accomplished 51.4 weeks of community service within 4 hours?! In addition, My Little Pakora provides a portion of our profits to The Girl Effect. Diwali is a great time to start the discussion about charitable acts.

:::Puja::: I am looking forward to our Diwali Puja Wednesday evening. This year, I have 2 bells to play during the aarti-one for each pakora!

the stars in your...apples?!

Did you know there are stars in your apples? We were pleasantly surprised to learn this from our...5 year old, Anika! Amazingly, the stars have been a topic of conversation for the past week in our house. Last weekend, we ventured to Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stowe, MA and picked a variety of apples. From Macintosh, Cortland, Red Delicious, and Golden Delicious the assortment seemed endless.

On our way home we discussed different recipes for the apples: applesauce, apple crisp, apples and peanut butter, pork chops and apples...but more importantly we decided to cut up a couple of varieties, compare them, and see the stars. Anika showed us how to cut the apples. As I cut each one, her eyes grew larger, I could the excitement settling in and the wheels turning to a AHA moment! "All stars are different, and the color in each is different, just like all of us!" Who knew apple picking and the stars in the apples could lead to a fantastic lesson! Try finding the stars in your apples, all you need is one, and like they say an apple a day...

How can you find the stars? Cut the apple through the middle rather than along the side of the core.
All stars are different and I have to say my kiddos are more motivated to eat their apples once they see the stars.

The Gandhiji Font

We love finding inspiration in everyday life and this video is more than just inspiring! To commemorate Gandhi’s 141st birth anniversary an amazing font was created out of his glasses, with each letter constructed from a part of the frame.

Available in English and quite a few Indian languages you can download the font for free at www.gandhijifont.com. The intention is to “inspire the youth of today to look at the world through his eyes.” We are in awe.

If it can’t get any better, the group who designed the website and font have created an phenomenal book, essentially a hardcover book based on the website. I cannot wait to have this in my library!

What a beautiful way to rekindle his legacy-We hope this warms your heart as it did ours!

Helping Japan:::

Almost a week has passed since the powerful 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated the coast of Japan. We have all seen the images: painful, heart-wrenching, horrific, there are no words for what the Japanese people are going through. With continued aftershocks, fires, nuclear explosions, growing reports of lack of food and water, the situation seems to be worsening rather than improving.

Last night, I silently shed tears after watching a mayor of the one the coastal towns recount his experience-his needs as he stated are simple: "we need food and water." As I continued to watch the ongoing reports there seemed to be lights of glimmer among the devastation: strangers helping others, no looting, a noodle stand passing out free food and the list goes on...

I am amazed at the resilience of the Japan people. They are strong. They are proud. They will rebuild. But they do need help.

At My Little Pakora, our mission has always been to help others, this is our #1 founding principle. We have looked into sending our existing inventory (although small) to Japan, but given the situation have not found a viable resource to ship too.

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is the leading textile standard for organic fibers. it is an internationally recognized standard.

how is certification secured:::
there are numerous requirements that have to be met as it relates to an entire supply chain of creating a product.

in simple terms the standard covers:::
the growing, processing, dyeing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and distribution of textiles made from certified organic fibers. for detailed information on the certification process you can visit the GOTS Website.

traveling with kids::::

we just returned from India ♥♡♥♡♥:::

10 days, 4 cities, 2 kids...chaotic India...but INCREDIBLE INDIA. while our schedule was overly ambitious we did have a wonderful time. the goal for the trip was to check on production given the new line is fast approaching (yea!!!) in April.

traveling with kids is not easy but i do believe we have gotten it down to a "semi-science" that works for our family. in the past 4.5 years we have traveled all over the States, Caribbean, Europe, and of course India. our last trip to India was 3 years ago with our then 15-month-old.

i do believe the key is prep when traveling with young kids-i prepped for weeks before heading on our recent trip.

here are some tips based on our experiences::::

1. schedule a travel visit with your pediatrician for overseas trips::::
we visited the NP at our pediatrician's office and she provided up-to-date shots, refills on meds, and any additional medication. for example, we started the kids on malaria pills 3 days before we left and this was a godsend since my four-year-old was a little snack for the mosquitoes in the warmer areas. she also provided us with a antibiotic for both kids in case they came down with the notorious "delhi-belly." thank god we never used the antibiotic!

2. pack antibacterial soap, bottle-brush, and a dish towel::::
we did this last time and it worked very well-we used our own soap and bottle brush to clean the baby's bottles. the dish towel was used as a place to dry the bottles and was washed frequently wherever we landed. all the baby's bottles and food utensils were boiled for sterilization.

3. pack baby food and dry goods for an older child::::
Happy Baby Foods , like their pureed veggies, mango, cereals came in handy for both kiddos! we were nervous about traveling with so much food but Happy Baby made it really easy with their portable products and no glass jars! make sure you pack enough snacks for the plane, we even had extra when landed back in Boston.

4. bring a sling for the infant::::
although we had a stroller, car seat, bags etc. the sling was extremely important for us. we used it everywhere and when our older one got tired of walking we strapped the little pakora in the sling so the big pakora could use the stroller. my fav sling is the Baby K'Tan...you cannot go wrong with all the various sling positions.

5. weigh your bags::::
make sure you weigh your bags at home so you don't incur fees at the airpot. i always feel bad for the poor souls that have to repack everything!

6. pack extra clothes for kiddos and for you::::
the first time i traveled with Anika at 3 months she had 2 poppy accidents on the plane and i only had 1 outfit.... a couple of years ago i made the mistake of not packing extra clothes for myself and was stranded for 2 days in Asia! now, i travel with 2 outfits per kiddo and a couple of items for myself. while this does make my carry-on pretty full it's well worth it. our return back to Boston from India was 36 hours of transit and flying time-the outfits were a necessity 20 hours into our return!

7. toys, books, games, crayons, ipad for the plane::::
for each trip i stock up on new items that the kids have not seen before. once the excitement of the plane wears off the toys make their entrance.

8. book the infant bassinet for overseas flights::::
there is a weight limit on the bassinet, but on our recent flight it increased to 22 pounds. if you can, book the bassinet when you book the flight.

9. car seats::::
in some places you can rent a car seat instead of lugging one across the world. we did this in Switzerland and it was much easier than traveling with one. GoGo BabyZ makes great travel attachments for car seats, essentially turning your car seat into a stroller.

10. have fun::::
some airports, especially in Europe, are equipped with a kids area. it's great way to get the kiddos worn out before a long flight. lastly, enjoy the adventure!!

vacation week is over::: the kids are back in school and we are thrilled to bits!

don't get me wrong, i love having my little pakora around, but 7 days at home with a 4-year-old in the winter (and a 9-month-old in the wings) was a little too much for me too handle. surprisingly, we just returned from 2 weeks in India (more on that topic latter) and that was easier than being at home!

after a couple of sunny...then rainy...then snowy days (this is New England after all) we survived with activity after activity. one of activities Anika LOVED was spending some time at our local chocolate shop, A Chocolate Dream (www.achocolatedream.com) , in Belmont Center.

for $20, and 2 hours of peace for me, a group of kids spent time making chocolate covered marshmallows, pretzels, and engaging in various art activities. the highlight of Anika's activity was making the most adorable, lovable, and just plain yummy, gumball machine. not a traditional machine, but one fashioned out of a couple of household items, some glue and paints. ♥♥♥

who would have thought a planter/fishbowl could function as a gumball machine and provide a couple of hours of entertainment! since we brought it home it has been a hot topic of conversation for her and has held pretzels, goldfish, marbles, and now her beloved seashells from Cape Cod.

while our week was packed, it was the "right" activity that lead to days of happiness, a very big lesson learnt for mommy.

so THANK YOU A Chocolate Dream for the fun-filled 2 hours for her and creating a little memory & big lesson of a vacation week at home....

on october 1, 2010 we packed up the fam and headed to new york city for our first trade show, ENK Children's Club!! anticipation was huge & expectations were high. we cannot tell you how much we enjoyed our first "official" trade show!

decorating our booth, using baby anya as a prop (a couple of people thought she was a doll in a bjorn♥) and meeting other vendors were the highlight of the show. of course we learnt a lot and received our first wholesale orders for the new line!

:::ENK LESSONS:::

1. the booth::: 6x6 booth was perfect for our little line. we considered upgrading to a larger booth but after mapping it out on my outdoor patio with kids chalk (loads of fun!) and considering the $1000+ price different we went with the smallest booth. it worked out great and i had enough room for the kiddos (when they were there) to play.

2. papering the wall::: it is a evil necessity. i hate wasting all that paper and wish there was some way to recycle it, but at the end of the day it does make the booth stand out. we went with a paper color that coordinated with our logo. we wanted a color that would pop, and it did POP (maybe a little too much), a blue would have been more calming. next time blue paper is must and it also coordinates with our logo.

3. banner::: we made a HUGE error with our banner. we when arrived in nyc it was wrinkled, hard to manipulate, tired looking etc. it was in such bad shape the only choice we had was to hang it on bottom of our back wall! this was a mistake. note::: for future trade shows, we will not only have a big banner above eye level but one that states we are an ORGANIC company! maybe adding a green leaf to the banner would have been helpful...

4. placement of product::: we needed product on our back wall. simple as that. as folks walked by their eyes automatically gravitated to the back wall.

5. clothing colors::: we hung our clothes according to category. for example, the girls products were together as were the infants/boys. on the last day of the show another vendor suggested we group our products according to color (duh, why didn't i think of that!). this worked really well, and add a another dimension of interest. our colors are so rich they deserved to be shown off!

It has been ages since we have blogged and figured it's about time we provided you with some insight into what we are doing at My Little Pakora Headquarters. To start with we have some exciting news to share-we are expecting in 8 weeks! A brand new Little Pakora will be joining the ranks end of May/early June. We are thrilled for the new addition! This Little Pakora will be very well dressed given our new infant line will be arriving in Fall/Winter 2010.

In addition to a new baby we have been working diligently to get this new line out and of course refresh some of our bestsellers, like Bandar (Monkey) and Hathi (Elephant). Making a baby and giving birth to a new line can be quite exhausting and one of the reasons we have been out of touch on our blog! Have no fear we are back and will be making it a point to post updates as they come along!

In the meantime, enjoy some of the candid pics from our latest photo shoot. We had the opportunity to shoot our infant line (Fall/Winter 2010) and our Boys/Girls line (Spring/Summer 2011). We will be posting the final pics in the next couple of weeks so look out for updates!!

Gnaana-Toys Inspired by South Asia!

As most of you know we love the educational aspect of our animals on our clothing and were thrilled to come across a fantastic toy company that makes eco-friendly toys inspired by South Asia as well! From the natural look of the puzzles to the teachings of the Hindu religion we were quite impressed with the array of toys that exude education, knowledge of India, and pure fun for little to big pakoras!

We recently sat down with Aruna Hatti, founder of Gnaana, to discuss her inspiration for creating these magical toys:

When was Gnaana launched? What inspired you to launch Gnaana?

We launched in September 2009. I came up with the idea when my husband and I were living in Bangalore, India in 2005. I was pregnant - and embarked on a (fruitless) search for quality, age-appropriate educational material about South Asia for kids 0-12. Even the Indian kids were playing with (mostly plastic) Western toys - even in the schools. I thought this was such a lost opportunity - the Indian culture is so enriching - why wasn't it being presented to young kids in fun, hands-on ways? Hence, Gnaana was born.

What does Gnaana mean?

"Gnaana" is the Sanskrit word for "knowledge" (the "gn" is pronounced like the Spanish "ñ" in "piñata"). And actually, the English word "knowledge" is derived from it.

Where are your toys made? How are they eco-friendly?

Most of our products are manufactured in India. And no plastics here! We use high quality natural materials such as wood and tin - so children can connect with the beauty of nature. Everything - from the initial design (avoiding the use of varnishes on our wood products), to the inks we use and our packaging decisions (cloth bags and tin boxes) - was done with Mother
Nature in mind. I also consider myself very eco-conscious (e.g., I use flushable gDiapers and carry cloth bags when I shop!) and these values are certainly reflected in the company.

What do you love about being in the toy business?

It's just fun! I've met so many brilliant and talented people. I also love how it fits seamlessly into motherhood - my kids help me pick designs and we try-out our products in playgroups. Seeing kids enjoy products I've created is supremely gratifying.

What are your most popular items for the holidays?

Definitely our alphabet blocks, with our The Chota (Small) Chef recipe collection in 2nd place.

What can a child learn by using Gnaana toys?

They'll learn about a rich and magical culture - about its music, mythology, languages, geography, history and cuisine. Our products are also designed with the family in mind - we offer tips and ideas as to how parents and caregivers can use our products to bond and create wonderful memories with their children.

Can your products be found in retailers? If so, which ones?

Right now, we strictly sell through our website. We may expand into stores at some future point, but we're happy with where we are right now.

Fall Foliage, Stunningly Beautiful!

Cold and crisp weather, now that can only mean two things, fall is here, and winter is near. While some may chose to begin their hibernation process, others will drive to the mountains for a hike amongst the glowing trees, or take a drive down the highway to experience the breathtaking views of blazing reds, fiery oranges and golden yellows!

We all know how beautiful Boston can look against the backdrop of weathered brick buildings and spans of open land, but how often do we appreciate it? Fall to me symbolizes a perfect opportunity for family gatherings and fun outdoor play. Check out this great map which highlights the best places to see the changing colors!

No child left behind on Halloween- who said you’re too young to enjoy the festivities!

This year on Halloween, children will run up and down the streets of their neighborhood looking for the home with the best candy!Toddlers will look on as older children trample through gardens, screaming trick-or-treat and scaring the day lights out of everyone they know. Then, it will begin….laden with the clattering of eerie ghouls and goblins is the sound of frightening temper tantrums and your little monsters crying....

So how do you introduce young children to the experience of Halloween without all the kicking and screaming which is inherently part of a toddler’s vocabulary? Our first suggestion is to encourage the “F” word, “Fun” and not the other “F” word, “Freight.”

Here are some of our favorites tips and tricks to make a Toddler Halloween as memorable and fun as possible:

1. Host a Toddler Halloween Party: A little costume parade up and down your neighborhood is a fantastic way to get the little ones excited about Halloween. Venture out early (before the "big kids") and end the night with pizza, games, and organic candy.

2. Decorate a pumpkin: Toddlers love arts and crafts and what better way to get them involved with pumpkins that having them painted! While you can go the extra mile of carving a pumpkin it can get messy, and we don’t recommend having a little one use the carving kit. Don’t stop at paints, use some glitter, googly eyes, feathers, and whatever else you have in your craft box!

3. Make pumpkin sandwiches: We love this recipe in our house courtesy of my daughter’s pre-school! This is a great way to get your Toddler involved in the spirit of Halloween while also having a healthy snack! The recipe is below and we have used organic ingredients down to the Natural Food Coloring (I had a great time mixing the colors to create Orange with my toddler!)

PUMPKIN SANDWICHES:::

What you need:::
-Organic Whole Wheat Bread
-Whipped Cream Cheese
-Organic Cranberries OR Organic Raisins
-Natural Orange Food Coloring (We recommend the brand India Tea which can be found at Whole Foods. They come with primary colors which you can use to make Orange Coloring)
-Pumpkin Cookie Cutter

Let’s get started!
1. Dye cream cheese orange using the natural food coloring.
2. Cut out sandwich bread with pumpkin cutter.
3. Spread on cream cheese and use raisins or cranberries to make fun jack-o-lantern faces!
4. Enjoy!

We have been so delayed in blog posts that we neglected to post about the fantastic organization we are supporting. A portion of My Little Pakora proceeds goes to the Grameen Foundation. Grameen Foundation was founded in 1997 by a group of people that were inspired by the work of the Grameen Bank in Bangaldesh. The Grameen Bank makes small loans to the impoverished without requiring collateral.

Inspired by the work of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Grameen Foundation was created to help share the Grameen philosophy and accelerate the impact of microfinance on the world’s poorest people. Started in 1976 by Professor Muhammad Yunus with a mere $27 from his own pocket, Grameen Bank today serves more than six million poor families with loans, savings, insurance and other services. Earth Day is 7 days away and how will you be celebrating?

Most will be participating in earth-friendly activities but if you are new to going green we will be providing you a new tip everyday for the next 7 days.

TIP #1: SAVE WATER

Saving water is not that difficult-you just use less water! Here are some ways to use less water:

Turn off your tap while brushing your teeth to conserve water and save energy everyday.
Take a quick shower rather than bath. (taking quick showers with your toddlers saves time and conserves water in one go!)
Reduce the flow of water in your kitchen and in your bathroom by installing a aerator. The aerator screws directly onto your faucet.

Celebrate a Eco-Friendly Holi!

Spring is coming! Spring is coming! What better way to celebrate than with the Indian festival Holi. Holi, the Festival of Colors, can be summed up in one word: COLOR!

The least religious of Hindu festivals, Holi marks the first day of spring. The two-day festival starts with huge bonfires and the 2nd day is marked with people throwing colored powder and water at friends and family. The significance of throwing colors comes from the traditional idea that colored powders have medicinal qualities that protect from illnesses' that come with the changing of seasons.

Each year Holi is celebrated in the spring with the specific date changing according to the Hindu calendar. On March 11, 2009 Hindus in India and all around the word will celebrate by playing with color and consuming a milk drink, Thandai, specific to this festival. You can be sure this festival is marked with fun, fancy, and breaking down of social barriers among rich, poor, old and young!

How can you celebrate a eco-friendly Holi? By making your own homemade COLOR and Organic Thandai! The colors below are derived from fruits, vegetables, and leaves. When playing Holi wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind being tossed! Kids and adults alike will enjoy making these colors as much as playing with them. **Recycle left over color for painting or making holiday cards**

Supplies:::
Turmeric-
Chick Pea Flour also called Besan
Marigolds
Beets
Henna Powder or ground spinach.
Blue Hibiscus Flowers (dried)
Water

Directions:::

Grate Beets and add to water overnight. The longer it soaks the darker the color is. Produces the color RED/PURPLE.

Mix 2 Teaspoons of Turmeric with 4 teaspoons of Besan add water and mix to create a paste. This paste is excellent for the skin. Produces the color YELLOW.

Boil Marigolds. Produces the color ORANGE/YELLOW.

Mix 2.5 teaspoons of Henna Powder with 1 liter of water. Can also use ground spinach for the same effect. Produces the color GREEN.

Grind dried Hibiscus Flowers to create the color BLUE.

Recipe for Organic Thandai:::
Thandai is a milk drink, similar to a milkshake that is drunk on Holi. You can be adventurous with your Thandai and blend it with ice, or serve it warm.

What you need:::
2 Cups Organic Milk (Whole Fat, Low fat work best)
1 Cup Water
1 Cup Organic Cream
1 tsp. Ground Cardamom
1/2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
10 Organic Almonds
10 Organic Pistachios
10 Organic Walnuts
1 Cup Sugar
2 Tsps. Rose Water

Tip: Choose local and Organic Ingredients whenever possible.

Let's get started!
1. Grind the almonds, pistachios, walnuts into a powder
2. Boil water, add Organic milk, Organic Cream and simmer
3. Add Sugar, Rose Water, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Nut powder
4. Simmer on low heat for 5-10 minutes, do not let pot boil over
5. Cool drink and strain through a cheese cloth
6. Use strained drink to blend with crushed ice, add some nuts on top for presentation and you have your Holi drink!

A big CONGRATS to Slumdog Millionaires for taking home 8 Oscars this year! We remember when chutney and cheese sandwiches were uncool, bindis were a foreign concept, and India seemed so far away. Sigg Bottles are everywhere!

As I was shopping at Whole Foods in L.A. my wonderful 2-year-old starts yelling: "mommy bottle, Aka Bottle" (her name is Anika but for her she's Aka). A week latter we are in a department store and she yells the same. As I started to look around and as my daughter has pointed out Sigg bottles are everywhere! We have been using our Sigg's for the past year and have noticed a increase in stores of these mommy and kid friendly water bottles.

There are some people that may be skeptical of these aluminium cylinders but at the My Little Pakora house we are huge fans of them. I actually have 2 1.50 liter bottles while my daughter has the baby sigg. Not only does the water taste great, they are good for the environment and do come in some really funky designs... Here are some benefits we have found:

1. I get my 2 year old to drink loads of water, which is a huge benefit in itself. :)

2 The water tastes fantastic in them-the taste in indescribable but it does motivate me to keep drinking my eight glasses of water a day in these bottles!

3. I am not wasting loads of $'s on plastic water bottles that are congesting our landfills, plus most water bottles are made of Petroleum which are limited in the ability to recycle them.

Belmont, Mass., August 2008 – My Little Pakora, a new retail website and resource center that integrates traditional South Asian culture and lifestyles with organic living, is unveiling a new line of organic cotton clothing for infants and toddlers at www.mylittlepakora.com.

After her daughter was born in 2006, Sonia Gupta, President and Founder of My Little Pakora, was struck by the parallels between the traditions of her Indian heritage and the principles of organic and green living – parallels such as an emphasis on natural food, home remedies, yoga and meditation, alternative medicine, and sustainable living.

“My Little Pakora’s line of organic clothing for babies and toddlers reflects this history of long-standing principles of natural and organic living that is fundamental to my heritage,” said Gupta. “I’m thrilled to provide a site that talks about integrating South Asian influences with organic living and helps to educate parents from all backgrounds on how they can do the same.”

In addition to the retail site, My Little Pakora provides articles and resources for parents to learn more about contemporary organic living in the United States, as well as the centuries-old traditions of organic living in South Asia and other areas around the world.

Organic cotton clothing is woven from cotton grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or other toxic chemicals. The cotton is grown using farming techniques that are designed to sustain the soil, the workers, and the eco-system at large. The organic clothing available from My Little Pakora features images symbolic of Indian and South Asian cultures, and offers options appropriate for boys and girls.

So it is about 4 days since we launched and the feedback has been fantastic! Our supporters have been checking out the site and providing us with feedback on all areas- from our clothing to our articles.
